Most people have a vague sense that they want to be financially free one day. They save a little each month, maybe put something into super, and hope it adds up to something meaningful by the time they're ready to stop working.
The problem with that approach? You're saving without a target. And when you don't know what you're aiming for, you can't build a plan to get there.
That's where the Freedom Number changes everything.
What Is a Freedom Number?
Your Freedom Number is the specific amount of money you need — invested and generating returns — to live your ideal life without relying on employment income. It's not a rough guess. It's a calculation.
And it's the first thing you work out inside the Wealthify Wealth Builder Blueprint, because without it, every other financial decision you make is just noise.
Why Most People Never Calculate It
Here's the uncomfortable truth: most people avoid calculating their Freedom Number because they're afraid of what they'll find. Either the number feels impossibly large — and that's discouraging. Or they realise how far behind they are — and that's confronting.
But here's what actually happens when you calculate it: the number becomes real. And real things can be planned for. Vague dreams can't.
A Freedom Number transforms 'I want to be wealthy someday' into a target you can reverse-engineer.
How to Calculate Your Freedom Number
The basic formula is straightforward: Annual lifestyle cost divided by your expected annual return rate equals your Freedom Number. For example, if your designed lifestyle costs $80,000 per year and you expect a 5% annual return, your Freedom Number is $1,600,000.
That's the invested asset base you need to generate your lifestyle without touching the principal. Factor in your actual lifestyle cost (not what you spend now, but what your designed life costs), your expected return rate, inflation, and tax.
The Number Is a Starting Point, Not a Ceiling
One of the most common reactions when people first calculate their Freedom Number is: 'That's more than I thought.' Good. Now you know. Knowing the number is the beginning of the strategy, not the end of the dream.
Once you have it, you can work backwards: How much do you need to invest each month to reach it in 10 years? 15? 20? What return rate do you need, and what asset classes can realistically deliver that? What income streams could you build to accelerate the timeline?
Why Saving Alone Will Never Get You There
A savings account earning 4% while inflation runs at 3% is barely keeping pace. It will never close the gap between where you are and your Freedom Number. Wealth is built through assets that compound — shares, property, businesses, income-generating investments.
Income is the raw material. Wealth is what you build with it.
Design First, Then Fund
The Wealthify framework is built on a simple sequence: Design It. Fund It. Live It. You can't fund a life you haven't designed. And you can't live a wealthy life you haven't funded. The Freedom Number sits at the intersection of design and funding.
Calculating your Freedom Number is Step 2 of the 9-step Wealthify system. It's where the system becomes personal — because it's built around your life, not a generic template. If you've been saving without a target, it's time to change that.
